About Karie

Karie has a transdisciplinary background in social science, business, government, ecological activism, and philosophy. She is a scholar activist at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) where she is researching the historical bioregional movement and is co-organizing the 11th Turtle Bioregional Congress happening in September, 2026. 

She is the co-author of the chapter, “Bioregions and Earth Law” in the 2nd edition of the legal textbook Earth Law: Emerging Ecocentric Law—A Guide for Practitioners. 

Karie is also passionate about film as a powerful storytelling medium and was an Executive Director for the short documentary Last Stand: Saving the Elwha River’s Legacy Forests. Her latest film, The Future is Bioregional is about coming together and reconnecting with the places where we live.

Karie has a BA in Sociology from the University of North Carolina in Asheville, an MBA in Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School and will complete her PhD in Philosophy from CIIS in 2026.
